Hidden Food Gems Series Ep.1

On my recent trip to Nice, France I flew with Lufthansa from Helsinki, Finland. The flight was booked as the last minute so I had a stopover of around 8 hours in Munich, Germany, one of Lufthansa’s hub airports. Having landed in Munich International Airport --> #wecare, I decided to take the train towards Marienplatz in downtown Munich. I bought a single full-day ticket (13 euros) because I wanted to see other places and could come back using the same ticket.

It was about a half an hour ride and I was right in the middle of downtown once I came out of the train station (Munich Marienplatz station). I started to walk and began exploring the old town. There was wonderful architecture and city vibes all around. I took pictures and videos but it suddenly became very windy and started to rain (2nd week of May). I pulled out an umbrella and moved under a shade.

An old man was standing there also and I started to talk to him. He was a funny retired German guy and during our short talk, he told me I should visit a café that he really liked for many years in the downtown area. So I noted down the name and once the rain stopped I started exploring again. In the afternoon I felt the need for caffeine and remembered the recommendation of that old German guy. I opened the navigator on my mobile and discovered that the café was around a 500 m walk away. Soon I was there outside the café.

It was a wonderful old style café on both the outside and inside. There were many people inside having coffee with different looking doughnuts which I had not seen before. There was table service so I sat at a table and ordered regular German coffee and a doughnut. Inside they were making fresh doughnut-looking things, so I asked their name and was told they were called Bavarian Schmalznudel or Bavarian Doughnuts.

They had a wonderful machine for deep frying and removing any extra oil from the doughnuts. The order arrived after 2-3 minutes, and trust me, it was the best coffee and doughnut I have ever had. They sprinkled a little bit of sugar on it which made it even tastier. I talked to the chef and owner a little bit. They were not so fluent in English but somehow we communicated with one another. All the staff were so friendly and allowed me to take pictures of everything and also with them too.

The vibe inside the café was so great, with many old people from around the area hanging out and chatting. It looked like this was part of their everyday lives.

I highly recommend this place if ever you find yourself in downtown Munich.
